ELEANOR MILLER RIGGS
folklorist|educator|editor
Kentucky museum
Graduate assistant
As the Education Graduate Assistant at the Kentucky Museum, I interpreted museum exhibits for students K-16, planned content for and lead educational programs, and taught arts workshops to students and the wider community. Additionally, I co-curated an exhibit ("The Essential Tree"), conducted research to support exhibit
planning, wrote exhibit labels, physically constructed labels and prepped exhibit spaces,
created signage, edited all sorts of written materials, curated the museum's social media presence, and more.
FRAZIER HISTORY MUSEUM
COLLECTIONS INTERN
In my role at the Frazier History Museum, I was able to gain more hands on experience with museum collections. I also learned more about the proper standards of care and storage of collections. I was able to experience all aspects of a job in collections, including picking up loaned exhibits, creating condition reports for incoming and outgoing loans, preparing exhibit items for display, packing many different types of objects, and even assisting with an entire collection relocation by helping to build out a new storage space and physically moving collections items. In addition, I was able to assist the museum's curator with
research requests by transcribing historic
documents and gathering data from the museum's Past Perfect database.
OSCAR GETZ MUSEUM OF WHISKEY HISTORY
Intern
As the collections intern at the Oscar Getz Museum of Whiskey History in the summer of 2019, I gained experience in the
preservation, accessioning, and digitization of museum
collections. This experience
allowed me to become further familiar with the Past Perfect museum software program and also enabled me to take the lead on implementing a large-scale accessioning and
digitization project.
City of bardstown
Intern
As the intern to the Historic Preservation Coordinator at the City of Bardstown in the summer of 2018 and 2019, I gained experience in the preservation, accessioning, and
digitization of collections in the recently created City of
Bardstown archives. This
experience allowed me to
learn to use the Past Perfect
museum software program.
Additionally, I learned about the processes involved with running a historic district. I also assisted in creating content for, editing, and troubleshooting the City of Bardstown Digital Historic Walking Tour.
Local learning
Intern
During the summer of 2018, I worked as an intern for Local Learning. Local Learning is an organization that seeks to connect “folklorists, artists, and educators across the nation and advocates for the full inclusion of folklife and folk arts in education to transform learning, build intercultural understanding, and create stronger communities.” During my remote internship with the organization, I updated Local Learning's Regional Resources by reaching out to contacts across the country and assisted with the publication of Volume 5 of the Journal of Folklore and Education by editing and formatting articles.
Pine Mountain Settlement school
Intern
During my Appalachian Culture and Folklife course in the Spring of 2018, I interned with Pine Mountain Settlement School to update the Storytelling Curriculum for their K-12 Environmental Education program. Throughout the process, I identified learning goals, connected content to the Kentucky Academic Standards, and listened to stories told by the program’s most regular storyteller in order to write summaries with learning outcomes for each story.
Horse cave heritage festival
Volunteer
At the 2018 Horse Cave Heritage Festival, I facilitated a narrative stage where participants shared their “Local Sports Memories” during the Kentucky Folklife Program's “Chattin’ on the Porch” stage. I also took photos, completed live audio logs, and controlled the sound board during other narrative stages at the festival.
Kentucky crafted
Volunteer
In addition to volunteering at Kentucky Crafted in 2018 to interpret a traveling exhibit, "The Makings of a Master," in 2019, my Folklore and Education class presented the "Woven Treasures" interactive area at the annual crafts market. In collaboration with the Kentucky Arts Council (KAC) and the Kentucky Folklife Program (KFP), I contacted and got to know basketmakers, wrote signage for the exhibit, planned kids' activities, and facilitated a narrative stage with basketmakers from Southcentral Kentucky.
